Everyone who works with the migrant communities know about the situations when a teacher asked the pupil to translate something to his/hers parent because the parent do not speak sufficiently well the language to understand what is requested from them. This stretches often to situations which have very little to do with the schooling and often social and family situations. Such cases have been well documented in the the UK and other countries and as much they were happening since very long time only recently the language professionals and psychologists started to have a closer look at them. I will explain why. It has been noticed that with the lack of access to professional interpreters various institutions can use the children to fill in the gap. The problem is that children especially in younger ages are not mature enough to process some information the same way like adults. When they are faced with the difficult questions they process them according to the developmental stage they are in. This one aspect of that. Another aspect is the pressure and stress the child experiences. We tend to think that children get over stress with little ill effect when it doesn't last longer but this depends on many factors because every human being is unique in their own way. Any pressure exerted on the child when especially his/hers own family is involved has always a negative impact on the quality of the interpreting and translation.
